Festival of Trees

A BENEFIT FOR THE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION

Passing of Kim Leonard

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our dear friend Kim Leonard.

Kim Louise (Ferguson) Leonard passed away unexpectedly on August 12, 2025 at the age of 64. Kim will be remembered as a loving mother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Kim was an extraordinary individual, consistently demonstrating compassion for the underdog and dedicating herself to various roles at the Festival of Trees, including tree designer, tree chairperson, gift shop chair, and numerous other responsibilities. Kim’s unwavering commitment and selfless spirit inspired us all, as she tirelessly inquired about ways to assist our mission in supporting children. Her absence will be deeply felt, and she will be cherished and remembered by all of us at Festival of Trees.

Kim was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan on July 6, 1961. She spent the majority of her career at Saint John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit and finished her career at Iron Mountain, retiring in December 2023. Kim was known and respected for her dedication and strong work ethic, and she developed treasured, lifelong friendships with many of her colleagues.

Kim was most known for her extremely kind heart and generosity. She was the first to help anyone in need and she did so often. Whether she was volunteering for Gleaners, Meals on Wheels or Festival of Trees, helping a family member or friend, Kim was the first to step up and offer to do whatever was needed. Anyone who knew Kim knew that she ‘got stuff done’.

Some of Kim’s passions included coffee (preferably a large Tim Horton’s with several creams!), traveling (especially road trips and always with Saint Christopher by her side), thrifting/exploring estate/garage sales, watching Detroit Lions football, animals, exploring Amish communities, and, most of all, her family. In her retirement, she became an adopted “Grammy Kimmy” to Salem and Evelyn, whom she loved and adored, and spent time with regularly.

Her favorite days were the simple ones – getting coffee and going shopping (or baking Christmas cookies) with Brittany and Fallon, watching the Lions or grilling dinner outside with Brett, or spending time with Evelyn and Salem or some of her many, many friends. She enjoyed taking trips with her family including cruises, camping, vacations in South Carolina and Florida, and exploring Michigan, often bringing back thoughtful gifts for her loved ones.

Kim enjoyed life with enthusiasm and never let a day go by without telling her children that she loved them. Everyone lucky enough to be in Kim’s life knew they were loved. She will be forever missed by all who knew her.

Kim was predeceased by her son Brandon Leonard, her parents, Delphine Ferguson VanLanot and Robert Ferguson. She is survived by her daughter, Brittany (Leonard) Jantz (Anthony), her son, Brett Leonard, her siblings Edward Ferguson (Kathryn), Lynda Ferguson, Terry (Ferguson) Ayan (Taso) and Tina Ferguson, her nieces and nephews, her “adopted” family, Fallon Tretheway, Jamie Zack, Evelyn, and Salem, and her beloved rescue pup, “Goodboy”.

In honoring Kim’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. The family will plan a celebration of life in the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit.
